
I wanted to send a big thank you to everyone that went out to see How to Train Your Dragon last weekend. It had a solid opening and we’re hoping that the word of mouth will give the film some legs.
Here is a breakdown of my work on Dragons along with some visual aids from the shots that were featured in trailers/promotions.
The majority of my casting was on Hiccup and Toothless learning how to fly and Hiccup’s relationship with Astrid.

Sequence: Stoick’s Problem
Stoick and Gobber discuss how to deal with Hiccup.
Shots:
Just the one shot: Gobber reacts “You can’t stop him Stoick”
Sequence: Bonfire Blues
The kids listen to Gobber’s stories around the campfire.
Shots:
The section where Astrid notices Hiccup’s fish left on his vacated bench. She looks over and catches him ducking out and running down the stairs.
Sequence: Accidental Flight
Hiccup repairs toothless’ tail

Shots:
The section where Toothless is airborne and Hiccup is holding on to his tail and screaming.
“Woooaahhhh no no no no no no no agggh”
Toothless gains confidence and starts pumping his wings and flies passed camera.
Sequence: Montage
Hiccup’s experience with Toothless gives him power in the ring
Shots:
Hiccup comes up into frame riding toothless. The camera pulls back to reveal that Toothless is tethered to a tree stump.
Hiccup makes an adjustment to the foot pedal and toothless lands. Hiccup makes some notes on his cheat sheet about how the tail reacts to the pedal.
Sequence: Free Fall
Hiccup rides toothless for the first time
Shots:
The section where Hiccup and toothless reach the peak of their flight and Hiccup becomes detached.
Hiccup says: ” Oh this is amazing, the wind in my…cheat sheet….stop!!!”
The cheat sheet flies lose, Hiccup reaches back to grab it. Toothless hears Hiccup’s command and stops short
Hiccup’s clips come undone and goes weightless. He launches off of the Dragon and flails his arms around.

The last shot: Hiccup looks down at the Terrible Terror and puts his hand on it.
The dragon dozes off and Hiccup says “Everything we know about you guys is wrong.”
Sequence: Romantic Flight
Hiccup and Astrid get a view of Berk from the sky.
Shots:
The section at the end of the flight. Astrid is petting toothless and asks Hiccup “So what now?”
Hiccup sighs.
Astrid says “Hiccup, your final exam is tomorrow. You know you’re gonna have to kil..(toothless reacts)…kill a dragon”
Hiccup says” Oh way to get the mood back on track:
Toothless senses approaching dragons and dives off of the screen.
Hiccup: “Toothless, what’s happening?”
Sequence: The Kiss
Hiccup and Astrid land in the cove after their flight and discuss how to handle the new threat.
Shots:
The section where Astrid reacts to Hiccup standing up to her.
Astrid: stunned “Ok……Than what do we do?”
Hiccup: “Just give me until tomorrow, I’ll figure something out”
Sequence: Final Exam
The town gathers to see Hiccup slay a dragon
Shots:
Hiccup is nervously waiting in the wing and Astrid approaches
Astrid: “Be careful with that Dragon”
Hiccup: “It’s not the Dragon I’m worried about”
Astrid: “What are you going to do?”
Hiccup:” Put an end to this, I have to try
He turns to Astrid
Hiccup:”Astrid, if something…goes wrong, just make sure they don’t find toothless”
Sequence: Vikings Set Sail
Toothless is loaded onto the boat and the vikings head out to search for dragon island.
Shots:
The top down shot of Toothless in chains struggling as he is lowered onto the boat
Sequence: Hiccup vs. Goliath
Hiccup flies toothless to fight the Red Death
Shots:
Toothless bursts forward through a cloud and lets out a screech. Close up of the Red Death. His eyes flare open and he turns to attack them.
That pretty much represents my work on the film with the exception of a few shots that went out of picture a few fixes, and some smaller shots of the Vikings on the boats.
